speaking of fireworks
October 6, 2013
This footage is from, at most, 40 minutes away on foot from where I’m now sitting. Quite possibly I heard some of this and thought it was normal October 6 fireworks. Death toll now 28.

Lots of fireworks on this holiday (and on other days as well), but I’m finding myself listening closely to try to tell the difference between fireworks and gunfire.

15 killed today

Apparently there is a death toll of 15 from street clashes in Cairo today. HERE.
I had no idea anything was going on today at all, other than the expected October 6 holiday festivities. It just goes to show how big Cairo is, and how localized the violence usually is. Whenever I’m abroad and see video footage, it looks like the entire city is in meltdown, but generally it’s one neighborhood at a time that’s having problems, and always a different neighborhood.
[UPDATE: On Twitter, they’re now saying the death toll is up to 20.]

There’s another damaging story HERE.
I’ve enjoyed watching football over the decades, but at this point would never let a son play it. It seems to me that the sport may not exist a few decades from now, difficult though it may be to believe at present.
