mild earthquake
October 12, 2013
We just had one in Cairo. A big one would be catastrophic for Egypt, with many poor people living in apparently do-it-yourself structures that can’t possibly meet any reasonable seismic code. But there’s still something exhilarating about them.
According to a website I found, In the past 14 years Egypt had 10 quakes, ranging moderately from 4.1 to 5.1. Not so bad. There was a big one here in 1992 (a relative rarity for Egypt) with dozens of 545 fatalities.
The last one I felt here, in May 2012, was centered in Crete. I’ll be curious to see where this one was.
