U.S. cuts off aid to Egypt

HERE.

This is a bit out of the blue. The general impression was that relations were improving recently.

So, why now? My guess would be that Obama privately drew a red line about no more live ammunition on protestors, and events of October 6 must have crossed that line. Otherwise, it makes no sense that it would happen now.

Let’s see if Egypt, as expected, becomes closer to Saudi Arabia to make up for the lost U.S. aid.

[ADDENDUM: CNN seems to have jumped the gun with the initial story, which suggested a total cutoff in aid. Now it seems it will only be a partial cutoff: still news, but not at all the dramatic surprise story it first seemed to be.]
