Since every resident of the city I’ve ever met seems to prefer the name “Bombay” to “Mumbai,” I’ve retrained myself to say Bombay.

I was there in January 2011, lecturing at the open-air rooftop gallery of the CAMP arts forum– surely the most picturesque urban setting in which I’ve ever spoken. The invitation came from the Bombay-based artist Ashok Sukumaran.

The exact date of the lecture was January 17, 2011, eight days before anything happened politically in Egypt. The curators were kind enough to let me sleep up there for a few nights the next week while I tried to rearrange my tickets in keeping with what was underway in Cairo.

Hat tip, Dirk. I didn’t know this was online.
