where the clashes are happening right now
July 5, 2013

It’s obviously been a violent day in Cairo, as pro-Morsi forces have struck back. There is now a large clash dominated by rock throwing near the Ramses Hilton, with at least 1 dead and 8 injured so far.
On the map above, Tahrir is the green circle near the center of the image that says Al-Sadat (which is the name of the Metro station at Tahrir).
At upper left you’ll see the Egyptian Museum. Right above that is a green circle labelled “Midan Abd Al-Minnim Riyad” (a rather unorthodox spelling of Abdelmoneim Riyad). In any case, that’s where the current fighting is going on. The Ramses Hilton is just above that, barely off the map.
[ADDENDUM: I just realized what an ancient map this is. Lots of stuff on this map is no longer there, and lots of stuff that now exists isn’t on the map. But the basic geography remains accurate.]
