new academic position
July 3, 2013
Effective July 1, I left the administration and became Distinguished University Professor at the American University in Cairo.
Though I will no longer be a member of the Department of Philosophy (since I will report directly to Provost Shaarawi), prospective graduate students should rest assured that my classes can still be taken for credit in the Philosophy program, and that I’m still happy to advise graduate students. But now that I can teach whatever I want, my course offerings may start to differ a bit from what one normally finds in a Department of Philosophy. I’ll be offering a total of 2 courses per year, most likely during Fall Semesters. (Though in 2013-14 it will be the reverse, since I’m on sabbatical in the Fall but teaching in the Spring.)
For family reasons, I’ll also be moving to Ankara and commuting to Cairo as job duties require. Turkish Airlines frequent flyer miles will start to pile up. And with a free semester every year, I’ll probably be lecturing internationally to an even greater extent than previously.
The American University in Cairo has been a very special place for me, and I look forward to continuing my association with that extraordinary institution.
