the protests are underway
June 30, 2013
We just saw a large (anti-Morsi) group pass slowly down 26th of July Street, the main thoroughfare of Zamalek. There were thousands of Egyptian flags, a number of Arabic banners reading “Get out!” (an imperative directed at Morsi), and some drummers and other percussionists.
The crowds look like a good male/female mix and with a decent socioeconomic distribution. I was struck by how many veiled women were in the crowd.
Cairo in general, but Zamalek in particular, is not Morsi territory. (In fact, Morsi lost both Cairo and Alexandria in last year’s election. Socialist candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi won both.)
