A horrific turn of events for a seemingly well-meaning Ohio college student (and native of Chevy Chase, Maryland in the suburbs of D.C.) who was teaching English to Egyptian children.

I would have advised Andrew not even to think of filming the clashes in Alexandria, given his obviously Western appearance. There is a lot of sensitivity here about possible spies, and often quite a bit of sensitivity about non-Egyptians getting involved in Egyptian street clashes in any fashion. He should have stayed away. But I know what he must have felt– young, thirsty for adventure, and caught up in the moment. He certainly didn’t deserve to be stabbed.
