tweets from Ben Wedeman

June 28, 2013

CNN’s Ben Wedeman (an AUC alumnus, whom I just met at our graduation a couple of weeks ago) is tweeting as follows (see below).

Zamalek is fine at the moment– feels more like the usual weekend crowd than any sort of political chaos. But Tahrir is just 45 minutes away on foot, and it sounds like unplanned chaos there.

But as for jitters in the expat community? I don’t feel like we’re quite there yet. The American killed in Alexandria was photographing a demonstration, and given that fears of “spying” are always rampant here, that’s risky business. I haven’t had a single dirty look from anyone all summer long.

Let’s hope it stays that way. We’re in the midst of changing residences at the moment, and one would rather move under tranquil conditions. (Dr. Zamalek will be leaving Zamalek, but more on that later.)

  1. #30june jitters spreading through expat community in #Egypt. Shakiest nerves I’ve seen since #28jan revolution.

  2. Huge, noisy anti-Morsi crowd in #Tahrir, and this is not even a planned event. What will #30June look like? #Egypt
