in lieu of an April Fools joke

For awhile I was on an incredible roll with April Fool’s jokes, year after year after year. That’s probably because it’s not normally part of my arsenal to engage in the sorts of temporary jests in which some people engage on a daily basis, and hence people tend to take me literally when I tell them things. (Somehow, it makes me feel bad to deceive people for even 5 or 10 seconds in the name of a joke. Always has.)

So, I’m not really in the mood to deceive all of you with a fool’s post this year. Instead, I’ll link to my 2009 APRIL FOOL’S POST on this blog, which deceived even some fairly close friends of mine for a couple of days. (The link at the bottom of the post no longer works, but used to lead to a laughing face with “April Fool” printed over it.)

Graham Harman: Heidegger und McLuhan – Eine imaginäre Begegnung

Persönlich haben sich Martin Heidegger und Marshall Mcluhan zwar nie getroffen, hätten aber sicher viel miteinander zu diskutieren gehabt. Sowohl Heidegger als auch McLuhan waren Theoretiker eines tiefen verborgenen Mediums des Hintergrunds, das unter den oberflächlichen Erscheinungen liegt. Obwohl beide das Tiefe und Verborgene zu ergründen suchten, machen sie beide paradoxerweise die Oberfläche der Welt als den Ort aus, an dem Kommunikation erscheint. In seiner International Flusser Lecture wird Graham Harman mögliche Zukünfte der Heidegger und McLuhan Forschung diskutieren und dabei einige Verbindungen zur Kunst aufzeigen.

Graham Harman ist Professor für Philosophie an der amerikanischen Universität Kairo. Er ist eine der Schlüsselfiguren des speculative Realism und der Object-Oriented Philosophy Bewegung und Autor folgender Bücher: Tool-Being (Open Court, 2002), Guerrilla Metaphysics (Open Court, 2005), Heidegger Explained (Open Court, 2007), Towards Speculative Realism (Zero Books, 2010), Circus Philosophicus (Zero Books, 2010), The Prince and the Wolf [w. Bruno Latour & Peter Erdélyi] (Zero Books) Viele seiner Text sind auch auch deutsch erschienen. Zuletzt in der Anthologie „Realismus Jetzt: Spekulative Philosophie und Metaphysik im 21. Jahrhundert“ erschienen bei Merve

Graham Harman wird auf Deutsch sprechen. Die Diskussion findet vorwiegend auf Englisch statt.

April 18 event in Cairo

For those of my readers who are or will be in Cairo, there’s an April 18 event shaping up at Beirut gallery.

It will take place at 8 PM, since my class ends only at 4:45 that day, and Thursday night traffic headed back into Cairo is generally horrible.

I’ll be engaged in some sort of discussion with artist Warren Neidich. Warren’s in town now; I just met him a few days ago, in fact.

Looking forward to our April 18 discussion.

our East African home

I read somewhere that anthropologists had shown photos of various landscapes to people all over the world, and that no matter where the survey was done (in the Nordic countries, the Arab countries, the USA, Japan, wherever…) human beings have a spontaneous preference for East African landscapes. As if they were burned into our ancestral memory as “home” following our millions of years there before spreading out elsewhere.

Goldsmiths podcast

Apparently, you can hear my recent Goldsmiths lecture HERE in podcast format. I haven’t listened to it, so am not 100% sure. But that’s what it seems to be.

elephant posse

This particular group of elephants (there were more than 200 in the group) is somewhat legendary near Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. We were told that poachers had killed 5 baby elephants from this group the previous year, and that in retaliation, the elephants sent a posse to track the poachers to their village and utterly lay waste to it, including near-apocalyptic destruction of the poachers’ cornfields.
