attack on Egyptian soldiers
August 6, 2012
16 soldiers killed near the border with Israel, by attackers who stole vehicles and then entered Israel itself and opened fire. The story is HERE.
The Sinai has been out of control for awhile (more or less since the end of the January 25 Revolution) and the death of 16 Egyptian soldiers underlines the seriousness of the problem.
I’ve greatly enjoyed Sinai trips in the past, but wouldn’t even consider going at the moment.

quick description of Salvador
August 6, 2012
It’s a wonderful city, perhaps describable as a sort of Portuguese New Orleans, but located on hills near the seaside, and with more African influence than New Orleans. And I don’t think there was one moment today in the old city when a samba band wasn’t playing or marching somewhere. It must be crazy here during Carnival.
When you get away from the city center, the relaxed feeling is more like that of Northern California.
