I’ve often been fascinated by the strange fact that Giordano Bruno and Francisco Suárez were born in the same year, 1548. I love them both, but you could hardly find two more differing temperaments, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Suárez was glad to hear that Bruno had burned at the stake. And in reverse, if Bruno had been familiar with Suárez, he would have called him a pedant and a sophist.
Yet both of them are really magnificent, really original in their own ways.
