Morsi reinstates Parliament
July 8, 2012
Story HERE.
SCAF is reportedly holding an emergency meeting to discuss this development.
On the one hand, Parliament should never have been dissolved in the first place. On the other hand, Morsi’s already rubbing me the wrong way, pretty badly.
It’s an interesting piece of brinksmanship for Morsi to try this just a week into his Presidency. He must be feeling stronger than he looks, at least as concerns how he looks from where I’m sitting.
Over time, it seems pretty clear that the Muslim Brotherhood will succeed in eroding the military’s power, unless the military panics and puts us under full-blown martial law, or unless a more open conflict begins in which all bets are off.
So, gradualism is in general probably the Brotherhood’s best strategy, but they also need to push a bit to make sure that they’re actually moving gradually instead of sitting there as motionless puppets. (I’m just speaking in strategic terms here. What I’m hoping for, of course, is a different President in 4 years –or 5 years, if that’s the term they decide on– before the Brotherhood has left too deep a stamp on things. Pie-in-the-sky delusional? I hope not, and I’m trying to remain optimistic.)
