old WWII bomb defused in Münster train station
July 7, 2012
Though Münster is quite a ways north of here, this did affect me today, because it meant the through trains from Köln back to Bonn were delayed by up to two hours. As a result, I ended up opting for a long subway ride back to Bonn. (It’s only underground in the two city centers, and otherwise passes villages, wheat fields, wind turbines, and so forth.)
The story, HERE (in German) says that it took longer than expected to defuse, because it was a rare Navy bomb with a highly sensitive trigger. The bomb defuser seems to have been quite startled by this particular design, but eventually they took care of it.
Those who were headed north had a major pain in the neck today. According to the announcement I heard in Köln, anyone going to places like Bremen and Hamburg had to get off the train in one of the minor Münster stations, take buses to another, then take a regional train to Osnabrück, then another regional train to one of two even smaller places that I’ve never heard of in my life, and from there it was possible to get back on track somehow.
