Bonn update

July 6, 2012

There was a speakers’ dinner last night, a couple of streets behind the Castle where the Summer School is being held. The venue was the rooftop of an Italian place, with tables covered by canopies in light rain. We didn’t get out of there until 1:30 AM or so.

It’s threatening rain again today. I thought of sightseeing a bit during our morning off, but one hardly has the energy after this rather demanding week. The first student panel starts at 2 PM today. Then, the much-needed weekend. I had thought of going back to Documenta, but it turns out that even though Bonn-Kassel isn’t all that far as the crow flies, it’s roughly 4 hours by train in each direction. Either you have to go with the ICE down to Frankfurt and back up to Kassel, or else you can go the more direct but very slow way through Siegen and Gießen, changing trains twice. Nor could I find a faster route through Düsseldorf or any other place in that region.

I’ll be back at Documenta in August anyway, so it just isn’t worth it to blow 8 hours this weekend on a train when I still have lectures to prepare.
