“Plan B”

June 20, 2012

Don’t like the sound of this headline from Ahram:

“Security source talks of ‘Plan B’ in which Shafiq is declared president, warns of ‘wave of unrest incited by Brotherhood,’ mentions plan to ramp up security in Cairo, Alex, Suez, Ismailiya”

Ah, yes. I think we could expect a “wave of unrest” if the apparent will of the voters is voided for the Army’s convenience.

Everyone of my age group remembers the Algeria of the early 1990’s fairly well. This isn’t entirely the same situation, but it does remind us of what can happen if people are invited to run in elections and then deprived of what appears to be legitimate victory in those elections.

The fact is, the country is so deeply polarized right now that we need to see careful and prudent steps if we want to avoid something much worse than any of the events of the past 18 months.
