important Heidegger translation appearing in English

June 8, 2012

Just noticed THIS on Amazon. Someone told me a few years ago that Andrew Mitchell was working on it, but I never heard verification of that. Looks like it was correct.

The volume (which, properly, matches the Heidegger Gesamtausgabe in tis respect) is actually an arranged marriage of two sets of lectures that I don’t remember as having much to do with each other. (Though granted, it’s been probably 17 years since I read the Freiburg “Basic Principles of Thinking” part.)

The real key to the volume is the crucial 1949 “Insight Into That Which Is,” from December 1949 in Bremen. It’s not only the first public appearance of the fourfold of earth, sky, gods, and mortals, and not only Heidegger’s first public appearance after the war (and to a non-academic audience, no less). It also foreshadows pretty much all of the key themes of the so-called “later Heidegger.” Technology is in there, the thing is in there, and so forth.

For all the hot talk about the Beiträge, if there’s a “second magnum opus” by Heidegger, then I think it’s probably the 1949 text. (And if not that, then it may be On the Way to Language, which incidentally is only in partial translation in the old English paperback that everyone uses.)
