Egyptian vote boycott?

June 7, 2012

Just saw this tweet in an NY Times piece:

Khalid Said’s mother: ”I will not choose between the plague and cholera” #EgyElections

That’s been my instinctive reaction to the runoff as well. And if I were an eligible Egyptian voter, I’d be highly likely either to stay home or cast a blank ballot just to retain some self-respect.

That said, I also instinctively dislike the “I’m too good for all available options” stance in most situations. It often amounts to empty self-congratulation and a failure to realize one’s own implication in some very real consequences in trying to sort out the lesser of two evils.

The problem is, I’m not yet convinced that either of the evils is “lesser,” and I would hate to feel like I helped vote in either of these people.
