I just felt like listening to John Adams’s minimalist opera “Nixon in China” while working in the office. (It’s a surprisingly fine piece of work, regarded by some as the most important piece of classical music from the latter half of the 20th century.) What I found was the following clip, in which they play the music (from “The Chairman Dances,” Act III) over footage of a Chinese ballet, “The Red Detachment of Women,” which was used as inspiration for the choreography in the Adams opera. Check this out. It runs for 12 minutes, so make sure you have a bit of time to concentrate.
