an interesting philosophy job in the Middle East

March 2, 2012

Let’s say you’re a fairly established philosophy professor with some publications and some department chair or administrative experience. And let’s say that you’re interested in the thought of adventure, a fresh start, and the chance to build a department as you see fit.

If that description matches you, you might want to look into THIS JOB, at Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. It’s an inland place where you can cross into and out of the neighboring nation of Oman (I believe the city is actually split between the UAE and Oman; I’ve never been there but almost went once, and read up on it a bit).

These jobs in the Middle East are invariably quite interesting, and also provide a good launching pad for seeing other parts of the world when you’re off duty. The major problem with North America is that it’s so damn expensive to get anywhere else in the world. If you’re in the Middle East, Europe is a very affordable trip, Africa is a very affordable trip, Asia is a very affordable trip. (North America is not, but these jobs usually provide annual home leave of some kind, including to North America.)
