It has long been known that the Y chromosome has vastly shrunk from its original size, and there have been suggestions that it would eventually wither away completely, putting an end to males. But the researchers described in the article mapped the entire 320-million year history of the Y-chromosome and discovered that it has lost only one gene in the past 25 million years, meaning that it has stabilized and will probably not be losing more of its remaining 27 genes.
