“Egypt’s Interior Minister Proven a Liar”
February 8, 2012
The increasing boldness of headlines is testimony to the new level of anger in the past week. But the headline is by no means too extreme: you may always safely assume that the Interior Minister, whoever it may be at any given time, is lying.
The story is HERE, and shows the birdshot injuries to 26-year-old activist Salma Said. Luckily, all of these injuries seem like they will heal normally with no lasting effects. She was almost hit in the eye, but not quite.
The most comical recent statement from the Ministry was probably the claim that the rubber bullets that hit activists were fired by “criminals” rather than Ministry troops. Yes, we all know that criminals like to stay well-stocked on rubber bullets.
Or was it even more comical when Habib al-Adly’s lawyer claimed that the killings of protestors last year were done not by the Ministry, but by American University in Cairo security staff? There’s been less anger about that preposterous statement than I expected, perhaps for the simple reason that al-Adly has zero credibility with any Egyptian in the first place.
