Sandmonkey’s latest column

February 4, 2012

Activist, blogger, and now politician Sandmonkey (now openly known by his real name, Mahmoud Salem) has been one of the most prominent voices of the Egyptian Revolution since last year, when he was arrested and roughed up (actually, he was well known even before that).

He now has a nice new long blog post about the Port Said Massacre, its political aftermath, and its consequences: HERE

Bottom line: he thinks that this was SCAF’s bridge too far, that they are now doomed, and that they know it. But also that they’ll take many more people down with them.

Could be. The main pattern in the Revolution was a series of incredible self-destructive acts by the regime at each key moment. This one was pretty self-destructive as well. Awfully hard to claim it’s just hooliganism when the entire country and world can see the police on film, just standing there doing nothing as armed Port Said “fans” invade the pitch, chase some of Egypt’s most famous football stars, and kill over 70 of the Ahly fans.
