There’s one mistake on the page: I wasn’t born in Chicago. Not sure where that came from. I was born in Iowa City. But somehow being born in Chicago has a nice air of mythical Americana about it, so let’s keep it there.

When I was 22 and visiting friends in Italy, I mentioned in conversation that my uncle was a jazz guitarist in Kansas City. The Italians were absolutely delighted by that fact. It sounded to them like something from an old movie. It was one of the first times for me that America seemed not necessarily boring when viewed from the outside.
