Wandered through the museum with Robert Jackson, discussing contemporary art. Among other things, we share an unfashionable enthusiasm for Clement Greenberg. (Whatever he may have been “wrong” about in the eyes of present-day artists, I challenge you to name 5 smarter people in the 20th century humanities. Or 3 better writers. I think Freud was probably a slightly better writer. Possibly Ortega y Gasset. After that it’s harder and harder to come up with plausible candidates. I’d call Bergson and W. James 19th century rather than 20th, since they already had their mature voices by the 1890’s.)
Signing off from here until sometime after the lecture, either late tonight or tomorrow.
