Gabriel Tarde’s Monadology and Sociology available in English

Here’s a nice bit of news. Tarde’s Monadologie et sociologie is finally available in English, in a translation by Theo Lorenc. (Hat tip. Peter Erdélyi.)

I read it in French 5 years ago, at Bruno Latour’s insistence. Tarde was Durkheim’s defeated rival for pre-eminence in French sociology, but he has a lot more speculative vigor than Durkheim (who is certainly a considerable thinker in his own right).

This particular book by Tarde has a wonderfully wild Leibnizian flavor to it, and it only gets weirder the closer you approach the end of the book.
