Protevi on the Philosophical Gourmet continental rankings

December 17, 2011

Protevi makes some legitimate points HERE about the heavily Germanist make-up of the continental rankers. I thought Protevi was quite polite and measured in his observations.

Then see the first comment on his article, made by Brian Leiter himself. Leiter seems almost constitutionally unable to respond to anything in public without speaking in almost ogre-like tones. For example:

“The one point I do agree with you on is that none of these people are interested in Irigaray, Kristeva, Badiou et al. (some are interested in Deleuze). But I think anyone interested mainly in those figures should probably not be going to a philosophy department anyway for a PhD.”

So, Leiter literally believes that these are all sub-philosophical figures, unworthy of doctoral-level research?

OK.

Protevi does a nice job of not taking the bait, and of simply not responding to that closing sneer by Leiter.
