still a bit stunned

December 7, 2011

Can Žižek’s forthcoming book on Hegel really be 1,200 pages? I don’t think I’ve ever held a single volume that long other than War and Peace, unless I’m forgetting something.

Speaking of which… I feel like rereading War and Peace. My first and only time was the summer of ’89, and I remember loving it. It’s not the sort of book you reread frequently. Pretty big demand on your time.

As I recall, it takes about 40-50 pages for non-Russian-speaking readers (like me) to learn to keep all the names straight, and after that it’s smooth sailing.

What great days those were, the summer of ’89. It happened to be my first trip to Europe, 21 years old.
