Tuesday night photo
November 25, 2011
Photo from Tuesday night on Yusuf El Gindi. Not my most prudent moment, but an experience I’ll never forget and am glad to have had. I got about 30 feet closer to Mohamed Mahmoud than this before the whole area was gassed. But this seemed like plain old tear gas, not the sort of invisible nerve agent others have complained about.
Security forces aren’t straight ahead, but left at the intersection where the light is. Only real danger here would have been a sudden security charge up this street; obviously, nothing could be fired or thrown around the corner of the big old AUC Library, so we were shielded from immediate danger of projectiles.
An even more incredible photo would have been of the motorcycles coming off Mohamed Mahmoud into Tahrir. But they were carrying the dead and the wounded, and it would not have been appropriate to take photos. At the time I was in purely observational mode. But last night, two nights later, I had terrible dreams about it.
