helpful downtown Cairo map
November 22, 2011
Here’s a helpful al-Jazeera map for those who don’t know Egypt. Tahrir is to the left of the blue line. Mohamed Mahmoud Street (site of the deadliest clashes now) is the long red line, and the small red lines are other streets with heavy fighting. The AUC Tahrir Campus is to the lower right of where the blue and red lines meet. In January/February, most of the police attacks were from the *other* side, off the left of the photo, where the Egyptian Museum is located. That is now solid protestor territory.
The Nile River is a block or two off the bottom of the photo. Everything above the photo is the heart of downtown Cairo. Everything to the right is downtown for awhile and then gradually poorer neighborhoods for awhile after that.
