“Sources: Theo Epstein nears Cubs job”

October 12, 2011

Good! HERE.

The Cubs last won a World Series in 1908, before Wrigley Field was even built (they were playing at the West Side Grounds, which was somewhat to the west of the current UIC campus).

It was roughly the same period when the teenaged Heidegger was reading Brentano’s doctoral thesis, if that helps put it in perspective. Arizona and New Mexico weren’t even states yet. Ronald Reagan wasn’t born for 3 more years, etc.

I know Boston fans are in a hurry to get rid of Epstein, but I’ll happily take him.

There are some obvious similarities between the Red Sox and Cubs jobs. Both teams play in classic old ballparks right in the middle of their respective cities, and both have endured long curses.

I didn’t realize how much I cared about this until I was stunned by my infuriated reaction to the Cubs ruining their best chance in the 2003 NLCS against Florida. I was on live chat with a friend at the time, and he said something like: “You won’t believe this. Some doofus wearing headphones just grabbed a foul ball before Moises Alou could catch it.” Yeah, that was the Steve Bartman moment.
