I want Epstein and Francona

October 5, 2011

“The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy reports that the Cubs have officially asked permission to speak to Red Sox GM Theo Epstein. According to Shaughnessy, there were meetings at Fenway Park this afternoon regarding the team’s response to the request.”

Boston fans are really down on these two guys, and of course Francona has already been fired and is fully available.

As a Chicago Cubs fan, I want both of these guys to come to Chicago– badly. The criticisms levelled against them are not unreasonable when considered individually. But the big picture here is… Boston was a cursed franchise, and they won two World Series for the team in a very short period of time, including an unprecedented rally from a 0-3 hole against the Yankees in 2004.

And guess which team is even more cursed than the Red Sox were? That’s right, the Chicago Cubs. It’s only been 103 [sic] years since we last won a World Series. Pathetic. We haven’t even been *in* a World Series since 1945. Pathetic.

I say, bring Theo Epstein and Terry Francona and give them unfettered control of the team for 5-7 years and see what happens. Whatever they did, it worked pretty well in Boston for awhile.
