a bibliography question

This is a genuine question in case I’m missing something… Is there a good reason why we still have to include city-of-publication information in bibliographical entries on books? This feels to me like a petrified artifact of a bygone distant era. And it’s sometimes a legitimate practical headache since Amazon, for instance, does not include that information on their book pages.
