lower Manhattan

September 13, 2011

There was a nice little dinner party in Tribeca last night, and I was wandering around beforehand, killing time for about an hour. Lower Manhattan is a lot more extensive and more geographically diverse than I’d imagined. It’s not just one tall building after another; there are also green areas, charming older buildings, at least one old cemetery, and so forth.

But what really gives you a jolt in that area is passing the firehouses, all just blocks from Ground Zero. It seems likely that most of the employees of these places were killed simultaneously ten years ago, and it makes you shudder.
