highlights from the Met

September 9, 2011

It’s an overwhelming sensory experience, of course, and I didn’t see every least corner of it. But the following things left the biggest impression on me:

*the New Guinea/Micronesia section (oddly, someone at the talk tonight asked me –first thing– if I had seen that section).

*the weapons & armor, normally not my sort of thing, but the Iranian, Syrian, Ottoman, and Japanese items were especially superb. I’d say the Iranian armor and the Ottoman sabers in particular.

*the Anthony Caro sculptures on the roof.

*the whole room full of Cézannes.
