the first obvious fact about New York

I’m reminded that New York is always physically larger than it seems upon first glancing at a map.

Even if we just stick with Manhattan, all right, the north-south distance in the borough is obviously immense.

But going from west to east across the island tonight, it took a lot longer to get across than I was remembering. Manhattan’s not quite as skinny as it looks on a map.
