another preposterously wonderful Lovecraft passage

From “The Whisperer in Darkness.” After reading the final letter from “Akeley” (actually either the Fungi from Yuggoth or one of their henchmen posing as Akeley, who has already been subdued or captured), Wilmarth writes as follows:

“Word-choice, spelling– all were subtly different. And with my academic sensitiveness to prose style, I could trace profound divergences in his commonest reactions and rhythm-responses.”

The academic sensitiveness to prose style. Well, that explains it. I think we all can see right through any variations in someone’s commonest reactions and rhythm-responses.
