Lovecraft’s grave

July 30, 2011

Swan Point Cemetery is beautiful, huge, and immaculately well-kept. It doesn’t seem well-labelled at first, but once you find the office, they have a slick computerized machine where you can enter any name and it will print a map for you of how to get to the gravesite for that name. “Howard Lovecraft” printed out immediately, and a young North Carolina couple was in front of me doing exactly the same thing.

The cemetery is not so close to the center of Providence, however. From my doorstep to the gravesite was about one hour and fifteen minutes on foot. That’s why I left it until this late in my stay.

Notice all the octopus and squid toys on the gravestone. Nice touch by fans.

The sun was so glaring out there that I’m surprised the photo came out at all. It was hard even to aim the iPhone accurately in the glare.
