the RISD Museum

July 24, 2011

Nice time this morning in the Art Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design, RISD, (or “rizzdee,” as it is pronounced in its acronymic form).

There’s a good mix of exhibits there… ultra-contemporary, Greek, Etruscan, Egyptian, colonial American design, and modern European painting (Monet, van Gogh, Cézanne, Matisse, though not the promised Picasso– perhaps on loan, in storage, or perhaps I simply missed it).

The Museum is also mentioned in Lovecraft, in “The Shunned House,” where the narrator horribly-hilariously recognizes some of the faces shimmering in the monster because he had seen portraits of those faces in the museum “of the School of Design.”
