so bad it’s good

July 23, 2011

All right, I promise this will be my last Rush post for awhile, but this is one of the most outrageous YouTube live music videos I’ve ever seen– Rush in probably 1974. Things to note:

*these were Toronto kids who were listening to way too much Led Zeppelin and hadn’t really digested it yet

*that’s John Rutsey on drums, not yet Neil Peart (Rutsey died in 2008, having fought against terrible diabetes complications throughout his life)

*Geddy Lee is wearing the single most ridiculous earring I’ve ever seen on a male

One interesting thing about rock music is how quickly bands can shift styles. Just think of what the Beatles were doing 5 or 6 years before Sgt. Pepper’s (they were still great even then, but it was such a different thing).

Similarly, it’s weird to think that the guys in this video were only 6 years from “Permanent Waves.” Radical stylistic change.

Does that happen in philosophy too? Probably, but I’m too tired to run all the possible examples through my head and decide.
