looks like the Lovecraft house was *moved*

July 23, 2011

I’m now reading something which suggests I was wrong to assume that “Lovecraft’s home at 66 College Street (now 65 Prospect Street)” meant that the streets had been renamed. No other alternative readings of that sentence had occurred to me at the time, especially given the obvious penchant of Providence for renumbering houses.

But no, it looks as though the house was actually moved, in 1959. Brown wanted to put the art building at the original site.

Joshi covers all this sort of Providence stuff very well in his biography, and I should have brought it along. It seemed too big to put in the luggage, though I suppose that book wouldn’t be too hard to come by here in Providence.
