an always pleasant sensation

July 21, 2011

Studying in a library in summertime, and hearing a lawn-mower outside.

Why is this so pleasant?

Partly it may be personal coincidence. Simply by chance I’ve had some fruitful summer study periods in libraries over the years.

But I think it’s also the sensation that one is doing “bonus work.” No one really expects you to be studying on a hot summer day when the mower is out, and that lowers the stress on the studying, since there’s no need to be doing it right now in principle anyway.

On top of that, it’s also nice to have that feeling of “as soon as I’m finished here shortly, it’s a nice day out and I’ll enjoy some summer activity within a couple of hours.”

In any case, I’ve been enjoying the mower outside Brown’s Rockefeller Library.
