Berkeley’s favorite church

The first major European philosopher to set foot in the future United States was George Berkeley. He lived right here in Newport, Rhode Island,for just a year or so, I believe.

Right next door to the cafe where I type these words is Trinity Church, reportedly Berkeley’s favorite. I will go check it out in a few minutes.

[ADDENDUM: Darn it. You can enter the church as a visitor on Saturdays and Wednesdays from 10-3. I arrived today, a Wednesday, a 3:45. I’d have liked to see what Berkeley saw inside, but am unlikely to return to Newport on this particular trip, since I may need to make additional trips to Cambridge and New Haven. Not to mention Arkham, Dunwich, and Innsmouth– Lovecraft joke.)
