Vick goes to lobby against dogfighting

July 19, 2011

I’m an animal lover who finds dogfights beyond disgusting. Nonetheless, I’m inclined not to continue persecuting Michael Vick, who is lobbying against the “sport”. Read HERE.

He was found guilty and served his sentence. He did pay a certain price, though of course not the same price paid by his dogs, but that was the punishment allowed by current law.

Whether or not he’s sincere in his repentance, we can’t know, and in a way it’s not even relevant. Even if utterly insincere (and I doubt it would be that bad) he can be a useful spokesman against dogfighting. The guy did take a major hit in public esteem and spent a couple of years in prison, and it probably did give him some time to think things over. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now, anyway.

I’m also never very impressed by cynical arguments such as “he’s only doing it because of… X”. When do people ever do things in a totally saintly vacuum completely devoid of some sort of practical interest? But practical interests are not merely corrupt and selfish; they often allow us to see truths that are invisible in cases where our interests are entirely uninvolved.
