unrealistic self-assessments

In relation to yesterday’s post on “My child could paint that!”, a blog reader tells me the following story.
She was taking a college literature class. They were reading Faulkner. A male classmate entered one day saying: “I could write this!”
Somehow, I doubt it. Especially since he indignantly rejected her feedback that the phrase he used in a paper “took the blunt of the criticism” needed to be changed to “brunt.” Faulkner probably would’ve caught that one.
