wobbling canvas

July 9, 2011

The beginning of the decline of Picasso, according to Greenberg:

“The first picture that really bothers one in the Museum of Modern Art exhibition comes… in 1925, and is the striking Three Dancers, where the will to illustrative expression emerges for the first time since the Blue Period… The picture goes wrong, however, not because it is literary… but because the placing and rendering of the head and arms of the middle figure cause the upper third of the canvas to wobble.”
