more on Mouctar Diallo

July 5, 2011

There is now reason for guarded optimism. Mouctar is allowed to stay in his own flat tonight and supposedly will be allowed to leave The Gambia tomorrow within the next three days.

If you missed the earlier posts, he has been charged with “terrorism,” and with attempting to spread Egyptian revolutionary ideas in The Gambia (Egypt has a reputation to be proud of). As far as I’ve heard, the only “evidence” against him is that he came from Egypt, they claimed he had no proof that he was one of our students (even though documents were sent), and that he was carrying books of an objectionable character.

I don’t know Mouctar personally– only through email. But I had a good impression of an extremely conscientious and organized student from those email exchanges, and my friends who know him and have taught him all love the guy, as do his fellow graduate students.
