Tamanya’s next new frontier
May 18, 2011
Quick dinner tonight, invited by a friend from the Gulf, to celebrate promotion. Nice dinner on a beautiful night.
On my way back in the house, Tamanya almost escaped out the front door. She never showed any previous interest in that, but soon curiosity will get the better of her. It’s actually not a good idea at this point– there’s an elevator shaft out there that could get a kitten in trouble if she were clumsy. Same thing with my terrace, which is why I haven’t open the door to the terrace since first rescuing her.
kitten notes

First, she finally realized yesterday that food often has a connection with the refrigerator, so she’s been showing more interest in observing what goes in and out of it.
Second, I stepped on her tail again. She always take this very personally, but this time she ran away and when I tried to find her to apologize she ran and hid under the dresser and kept evading my hand when I stuck it under there. It really hurts her feelings every time this happens; she has no concept of “by accident” yet, which is really too bad because with her it happens once every couple of days, given how closely she huddles around one’s feet.
But luckily in this case, kittens have short memories. She went from literally running away from me as from an ogre, to ten minutes later demanding to be picked up.
Right now she’s chewing my phone bill, though presumably just to get my attention, which she has just succeeded in doing yet again…
the new Blackberrys

Are better if you have small fingers.
I miss my old model with the metal keys and the thumb-wheel on the side (though it would have destroyed my right thumb after much longer use).
This new one has had setup problems, some of them due to my unfamiliarity with the new design including the track pad, which seems over-sensitive.
Now the phone is working but the email isn’t working yet.
Funny, I made it all the way to 2006 without ever owning a cellphone, and got one then only because it was given to me as a gift, from some friends in Jordan who owned a small cell phone company. But now I’m pretty much crippled in daily life without a smartphone.
out of control

This kitten. She’s been a hellcat for the past two days! My fear is that she’s bored without her three adult cat friends from the babysitter’s. I’m just a bland human by comparison.
Knocking over lots of things is to be expected. The hard part right now is the many attacks with teeth.
an ultra-mixed metaphor

Let me again add the disclaimer that I despise haughty language “purists.” There are times when pretty much any rule of grammar or usage can and should be broken, if it leads to sufficiently vivid effects.
That said, the following remark by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is almost painful. He’s speaking happily about having earned the right to this summer’s first NBA draft pick, which they badly need after losing LeBron James last summer.
“Maybe this will be the final straw in getting over the hump, getting to the other side, and having a lot of hope for the future.”
Oh good, looks like Cleveland gets both the 1st and 4th picks (the 1st pick was acquired form the L.A. Clippers). It’s the weakest draft in years, but they could pick up Kyrie Irving from Duke and one other very good player. Cleveland really deserves it after that LeBron debacle.
