lucky Tamanya!

May 4, 2011

I was sitting here feeling bad about sending her to the vet for 8 days where a bunch of dogs also live.

But then the assistant to the provost came in and demanded to take her. Wow! She’s a cat expert, so there are few people I would trust more. Babycat is still just too needy to inflict on any friend who isn’t deeply experienced in caring for cats. I’ve become pretty good at bottle-feeding a kitten in less than two weeks, but it takes patience.

That will be a fun time for Tammy. The only question is whether the three adult cats living at that residence will accept her.

Just received an email saying I subscribed to my own blog and will be notified every time I make a post. Not sure how that happened, and I don’t want it.

Obviously, the only solution is to boot myself from the subscribers’ list.

conference, day two

May 4, 2011

A nice, brisk day today with just three panels, all of them good. An especially moving moment was a biographical film on artist and electronic musician AHMED BASSIOUNY, presented by his friend.

I never met Ahmed, but many people at the American University in Cairo knew him personally; he lectured at Helwan University, one of the state universities in the Cairo suburbs.

He was apparently shot by a sniper and then run over by a law enforcement vehicle, presumably in Friday, January 28, though his body was not located until about 4 days later.

[ADDENDUM: If anyone is planning to go to the Venice Biennale, the Egyptian section will have a special exhibit on Bassiouny’s work. Today I was also delighted to learn that that portion will be curated by my former student Aida El-Torie.]
