Going out to protest in Syria. It would be fair to say that Syria has revealed a heart of stone in dealing with past protests.

HERE.

For some background on Syria’s counterinsurgency track record, a mere glance at Wikipedia’s “Hama Massacre” article will do:

“An estimated 17,000 to 40,000 people were killed, including about 1,000 soldiers, and large parts of the old city were destroyed. The attack has been described as possibly being ‘the single deadliest act by any Arab government against its own people in the modern Middle East’.”

This was in 1982, by the elder Assad. It was a Muslim Brotherhood uprising that Assad ruthlessly crushed.

My favorite part of the Wikipedia article is in the box at right: “Attack type: Scorched earth.”
